What Great Principals Do Differently

One of our educational heroes is Dr. Todd Whitaker.  After reading some of his books and hearing him speak a few times, some of my favorite Dr. Whitaker nuggets are:

  • Establish expectations vs. correcting behavior
  • The single best indicator of principal effectiveness is teacher input.
  • The ability to know how you are perceived is a skill.  How are you coming across?
  • If you have great teachers, you have a great school.
  • People will always be the problem, but people will always be the solution.
  • In a great teacher's classroom, nothing is random. Everything is intentional.
  • The principal is resposible for the climate in the building.
  • "10 days out of 10." Treat every student with respect and dignity every day, all the time.
  • How many days out of 10 do you want to be treated well?
  • Three Behaviors that should never happen from a teacher or principal in a classroom or a school:
    • Never argue. We teach them how to behave.
    • Never yell.  You lose the students/teachers the moment you yell.
    • Never use sarcasm. Humiliating someone in front of their peers under the guise of humor is never okay.
  • Raise the praise. Minimize the criticize.
  • Five things that help praise work:
  • Authentic
  • Speciifc
  • Immediate
  • Clean
  • Private
  • Earn the credibility before you need the credibility.
  • Be authentic.

My favorite Todd Whitaker book is The Ten-Minute Inservice, a must read for every school leader!

Melanie and I were at a conference about a year ago and were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with Dr. Whitaker for a few minutes!
