Looking back on the past year, I (Melanie) have learned a lot. For those who don't know, I was a counselor and transitioned to the role of assistant principal not too long ago. I believe as an educator, we should always be learning and reflecting but I especially have seen the impact as a new administrator.
I have been blessed to have Megan as a principal and mentor. It is even more amazing that we share the same beliefs as educators. That is the key to having the ability to have reflection with your mentor. I know that I will not know everything by reading books (although I learn so much from them). I know that I must seek feedback, have a growth mindset, and I MUST be open to ways that I can do things even better.
I think that to truly have honest reflection, we must be humble and open to feedback. Whether we have done something for 10 years or 1 year, for me, the goal each year should be, "How can I learn and how can I be better than I was at the beginning of the year?"
Personally, constant reflection is what has helped me to form my educational beliefs. There are all types of ways to reflect. For me, having dialogue with my mentor (Megan) and other educators is the most valuable way. For others, they journal or have quiet time. I think each individual has to do what works best for them. I love having conversation because I can be challenged (in a positive way) and it is invaluable to actually hear how you are doing. I think it's not about the method of reflection but just that you take the time to do it!
How do you reflect? Leave a comment below. We would love to hear your ideas!
